Resources for Professionals

The Association Method is a multisensory, structured language curriculum that teaches children to read, write, say and process language. It has been used successfully for children with autism, severe childhood apraxia of speech, receptive and expressive language disorders, dyslexia, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy and hearing impairment. Here's an article about the Association Method.

Sensory Integration Disorder can cause life to be overwhelming and confusing for individuals affected by it. Therapists use sensory experiences like touch, pressure, movement, sight and sound as the foundation for students to open up to sensory input and respond without becoming defensive, seeking additional sensory input or needing to withdraw. This process that the brain goes through to organize and interpret multisensory input-sensory integration-enables a child to be attentive, focus and learn. Touch, pressure, and movement also give the children an awareness of their bodies, or a "body map," that improves their ability to use their bodies more efficiently. Pioneered by Stanley Greenspan, M.D. and Serena Wieder, Ph.D., the DIR (Developmental Individual Difference Relationship-based)/Floor Time approach focuses on helping children master the critical building blocks of relating, communicating and thinking, rather than on symptoms alone. www.floortime.org/ .

Apraxia
is a motor speech disorder that affects a person's ability to sequence sounds for intelligible speech. A great resource and listserve can be found at www.apraxia-kids.org .

Rapid Prompting is an important tool that can compliment the Association Method by allowing a child to demonstrate the depth of their current knowledge while working to develop speech, language and literacy through the Association Method.

HALO is a non-profit organization providing Soma® RPM, which is academic instruction leading towards communication for persons with autism.
